There’s no question that Disney has tackled perhaps one of its biggest most ambitious projects to date. Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser has actually come to fruition surviving untold amounts of budget cuts, timeline challenges, and a multi-year global pandemic. It’s no surprise that the big risk also racks up some big costs for the consumer. Fetching upwards of $5,000 and more, it’s a vacation that nobody would call a budget-oriented venture.
Even if the hefty mid-four-digit price tag doesn’t cause you to Batuuan eye, the more discerning vacationer is going to want to know if this first-of-its kind offering from the Mouse is even worth the while. To help you decide if a two-night journey to a galaxy far, far away is something you’d be interested in, we’ve complied a quick hit list of exactly what the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser IS and, perhaps more importantly, what it is NOT.
Galactic Starcruiser Is NOT…
A Relaxation-Focused Getaway
While initially billed as a “Star Wars hotel” this experience is far from a typical hotel setup. In fact, it’s built more like a cruise-style vacation. However, this is also not…
A Cruise-Style Vacation
While the mechanics of the adventure are more attuned to a cruise-style vacation, a space cruise is more of a backdrop to this broader immersive theater story unfolding over the course of the two days. You won’t be able to find a spa, a pool, a big revue show here (although arguably we think you should!)
This is a common and popular way to enjoy Disney themed entertainment. Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Starcruiser is not that kind of movie. While you can choose how much or little you want to participate, you’re going to get the most value out of the adventure if you’re comfortable letting go and diving into the fun. We touch more on the passive activism in our original review below.
Galactic Starcruiser Is…
A One-Of-Its-Kind Immersive Theater Experience
First and foremost, you are signing up for a role-playing experience in which you are not just a witness to the developing story but having a hand in directly affecting how it unfolds. Multiple storylines are interweaved into this adventure catering to a wide range of tastes. Classic Star Wars espionage and hijinks will be the most popular but Disney really painted with a broad narrative brush here with storylines that focus a range of interests including more on the lore of the Force (both lightsaber training and also the more meditative mindfulness approach) and even music with not just a super star singer but also a DJ and musician onboard with their own interweaving storylines. (It would be fun if a culinary discipline was also tackled!)
Feeling Like You Lived Through a Star Wars Film
In truth, you honestly don’t have to be a Star Wars fan to enjoy the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. While mega fans will definitely get the most meaningful experience, anyone who would feel comfortable wanting to go and see a Star Wars film will find themselves in good company on board. In the way that the cruise is more of a backdrop to the immersive theater experience, you could say the same for the overall Star Wars theme. What’s most special about this experience is the unfolding narrative that Disney has crafted. Still, once all is said and done, you’ll feel as if you’ve lived through one heck of a Star Wars film.
You will find moments where you’re suddenly being tasked with a mission and it’s absolutely your choice to decide whether you join the fray. Some missions are big and others far simpler. I had an experience with the latter and as silly as it was, it formed a core memory, a cornerstone to the whole experience.
The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is clearly a very unique and new offering and what you get out of the experience will largely depend on how much you are able to maintain a suspension of disbelief and engage with what lays before you. Although the abridged media tour that I was given was brief, it left me wanting more. Scrounging up the galactic credits to embark on this voyage is the hard part.
