One of the most requested titles since Disney+ launched in 2019 (maybe just by us) is finally making its debut with RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN’S CINDERELLA waltzing onto Disney+ starting February 12, 2021.
Over 60 million people watched the November 2, 1997 televised premiere on ABC’S The Wonderful World of Disney. The Debra Martin Chase, Neil Zadan and Craig Meron produced film broke the mold with colorblind casting and thrilling vocals. Brandy stars as Cinderella, with Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother, Paolo Montalban as the Prince, Bernadette Peters as the Stepmother, Whoopi Goldberg as the Queen, Victor Garber as the King, Jason Alexander as Lionel, and Veanne Cox and Natalie Desselle as Cinderella’s stepsisters.
Earning 7 Emmy Award nominations and celebrated for its diverse representation, sweeping musical acts, and unforgettable song book, the 1997 film features an incredible array of beloved and original songs by the iconic songwriting duo Rodgers & Hammerstein, including “Impossible,” “In My Own Little Corner,” “Ten Minutes Ago,” “A Lovely Night,” “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?” and more.
RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN’S CINDERELLA is one of the only major musicals written specifically for television. The original telecast in 1957 starred a young Julie Andrews as Cinderella, and a remake in 1965 featured Lesley Ann Warren.
The 1997 movie was directed by Robert Iscove, written by Robert I. Freedman, and choreographed by Rob Marshall. Whitney Houston, Debra Martin Chase, Craig Zadan, and Neil Meron served as Executive Producers. Chris Montan was a Producer and Robyn Crawford was an Associate Producer.
