KING OF THE HILL is coming back to the small screen and we can’t be more excited, I tell ya what. After feeling like we were in Arlen, Texas at the immersive activation, we also got to learn more about the show at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 with an official panel that featured cast and crew discussing the legacy of the original show and hints about what to expect in the upcoming reboot.
Here’s a bit of what we learned for the return of KING OF THE HILL during San Diego Comic-Con 2025.
The panel was moderated by Michael Schneider (Variety Executive Editor, TV) and featured panelists that included Mike Judge (Co-Creator, Executive Producer, voice of Boomhauer), Greg Daniels (Co-Creator, Executive Producer), Saladin Patterson (Executive Producer and Showrunner) plus stars Pam Adlon (Voice of Bobby Hill), Kathy Najimy (Voice of Peggy Hill), Lauren Tom (Voice of Connie Souphanousinphone), and Toby Huss (Voice of Dale Gribble).
Below are some of the highlights.
- The new season is set about 15 years after the original, with characters aged up and we see Hank and Peggy return from a long stay in Saudi Arabia
- The decision to bring the series back stemmed from a live read in 2017 that re-sparked the cast and creators’ passion for the show. The show blends original tone and humor with updated, relevant storylines reflecting modern life and the aging of the characters.
- Hank struggles with retirement, trying to find new hobbies and a role in a changing world
- Peggy is still an expert speaker of español– in her own mind, at least
- Bobby is now an adult chef
- Connie has become an adventurous, independent young woman exploring ethical non-monogamy
- Dale, originally a fringe conspiracy theorist, is now considered more mainstream and was even mayor of Arlen at one point
- The writing room focused on making the stories relatable to viewers’ real-life experiences and changes, particularly with parenting and aging.
- New cast members include Ronny Chieng as Tom and Keith David
- Pam Adlon (voice of Bobby) described Bobby as her favorite character she’s ever played, noting how much she relates to him.
- She said Bobby inherited Hank’s work ethic but still maintains his creative, clown-like personality.
- Kathy Najimy said King of the Hill was one of the best jobs she’s ever had.
- When asked about returning to the character, she said Peggy “lives in us” and came back naturally once she stepped into the booth.
- She emphasized how much she values good writing and praised the show for its consistently strong scripts.
- Lauren Tom said she was initially apprehensive about the revival but felt relieved by the strength of the writing.
- Connie is no longer defined by her parents’ expectations and more in control of her own path.
- The show will include tributes to original cast members who have passed away, including Brittany Murphy, Jonathan Joss, Johnny Hardwick, and Chuck Mangione.
- Toby Huss now voices Dale Gribble, taking over for the late Johnny Hardwick, who will still be heard in the first six episodes.
- Despite changes and evolution, the characters maintain their core identities—Peggy still thinks she’s always right and knows Spanish
- King of the Hill returns for Season 14 on Hulu with all 10 episodes releasing at once starting August 4, 2025.
