Last Friday morning in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con was quite the emotional one, bringing back all the feels from the recent conclusion of the latest phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Screenwriters and producers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely gathered with moderator Jeff Goldsmith (Backstory magazine’s (www.backstory.net) publisher/editor-in-chief ) to talk about the huge task of writing both AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and AVENGERS: ENDGAME.
Here are some highlights from the conversation.
- Markus shared that ENDGAME was about 99% done before INFINITY WAR came out.
- When asked about their toughest day working on the films, McFeely said it was on INFINITY WAR. In 2016, “no one liked what we had, the Thor story line ‘sucked.'” Markus said it was too action related, McFeely says he did not feel like they did enough, but that is the nature of writing.
- Tilda Swinton was known as Doc Brown on the set and on the character board.
- Was the quantum realm was protected from the snap? The writers say the stones do not differentiate, so Scott surviving was just lucky.
- For the writers, the THOR Lewbowski was just beautiful. They thought the emotional tracking was important especially with his mom.
- Thanos’s death was an empty one, but killing him helped him as a character. He had one goal and he accomplished it, and that was the most shattering thing for the Avengers.
- Bringing closure to Howard and Tony was very satisfying and gave them a real honest moment.
- ENDGAME was always going to be an Avengers movie, and McFeely said they knew they would be saying goodbye to many of the original characters. McFeely said they wanted to explore those stories for the originals, and the timeline let them.A fan asked the duo if the believed in the Time Heist and if they actually talked with scientists about it. They all agreed that BACK TO THE FUTURE was a bunch of bull, but they did look to other films.
- Nick Fury was never a part of the battle.
But Wait, There’s More!
