House Reviews
The Conjuring Universe (NEW!)
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃🎃⚫
What it is: Strap in for a tour of the Warrens’ most hair-raising and gruesome cases, including those that inspired The Conjuring, Anabelle, and The Nun. In each investigation, encounters with cursed artifacts make you the target of the possession.
What we thought: This maze was definitely the highlight of the night for us. Having watched The Conjuring and Annabelle last week for the first time and not super loving them or finding them particularly scary, we were surprised at how much fun and how many screams this one elicited. This being our first haunt maze of the season may have had something to do with all of that, but nonetheless, we really enjoyed it. There are super effective jump scares (much like the films) and some really cool uses of projections. I even had a scare actor throw holy water on me which was a first for me.
Willoughby’s Resurrected
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
What it is: Evil spirits roam the once-affluent Willoughby’s family mansion that now echoes with whispers and footsteps of these restless spirits, creating an atmosphere of perpetual dread.
What we thought: I really think we hit this one at the perfect time. The house was full of scare actors who were all super on and fun and in character. We got to do a lot of banter while slowly walking through the path with a few of them, which is one of my favorite things to do in a maze so it got extra points for that. The set design on this one was honestly gorgeous and impressive. We didn’t expect to see that much detail work in a Six Flags haunt attraction, but the mansion’s interiors were fantastic.
Trick ‘r Treat (NEW!)
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃🎃⚫
What it is: Enter a dark and twisted candy trail nightmare on a jack-o-lantern-lit path of supernatural encounters which tap into your deepest fears. With Sam, the infamous Spirit of Halloween, as your guide, learn the rules of the spooky holiday before entering a world where tricks dominate treats.
What we thought: This one was really fun. Trick ‘r Treat is one of those perfect scary spooky fun movies to me and I think this maze did a pretty good job of getting that vibe down. The inclusion of all the different vignettes from the movie like the werewolf women and the eerie neighbor was well done. My favorite was the laser water effect for the bus of drowned children. Also, the final scare from Sam was somehow terrifying and adorable at the same time. My only complaint was some rooms felt a little empty.
Truth or Dare
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃🎃⚫
What it is: In a warped game of Truth or Dare, guests find themselves questioning their every move. The stakes are perilously high as the dares become increasingly dangerous and the truths reveal hidden fears and dark secrets. Can you handle the pressure, or will the game unravel your sanity?
What we thought: This one was a neat concept. As lovers of vintage game shows, the idea of turning one into a dangerous game and a haunt was super fun. We ended up doing this maze entirely by ourselves which probably also added to our enjoyment and to the amount of scares we got. The big “puffer” tunnel (I don’t know what you call those things) full of bees was especially nerve-racking. The final encounter with the host was a fantastic ending. I will say, I think because we were the only ones in there we might have missed a pre-show element that explained the story, but I’m not 100% sure on that.
Vault 666 Unlocked
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃⚫⚫
What it is: Demonic relics are locked in a dark and sinister antique shop, waiting to be unleashed upon anyone foolish enough to disturb their rest. Haunting and inexplicable occurrences plague those who dare to enter, for the relics do not forgive or forget.
What we thought: This was another maze we got to do completely by ourselves. I thought it was kind of great that for several mazes the employees were pulsing the line so we never really ran into a conga line-like experience and we got to take our time with some of them. One employee even had a stopwatch to keep time on groups. This house was the one where I got screamed at the most. Like just lots of really ear-piercing yells from the actors. I was surprised my ears weren’t ringing by the end. At one point I got so disoriented from the yelling a scare actor got to mockingly ridicule me and turn me in the right direction. The set design for this one was also top notch and there were some really great details and uses of black light.
The SAW Franchise (NEW!)
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃⚫⚫
What it is: Celebrate the 20th anniversary of SAW with an all-new experience honoring the franchise’s legacy of terror by plunging guests into the depths of Jigsaw’s twisted mind. Guests will endure torturous trials and come face to face with some of John Kramer’s most diabolical contraptions before time runs out.
What we thought: We got to experience this maze at Six Flags Scream Break earlier this year and it’s ok. We’re not huge fans of the Saw franchise so maybe that’s why it doesn’t do a ton for us. I know it was modified this year but outside of a few layout changes in the first few rooms and the loss of the pre-show at the beginning, we really didn’t notice that much of a difference from the version we saw in March. The Saw traps look cool and the actors are really selling their terror, but the continued use of the pig mask scare actors gets old after a while.
Condemned Forever Damned
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃⚫⚫
What it is: In this dilapidated home where the walls are alive and terror crawls in every corner, guests are left trying to escape the spirits of those who once lived there as they unleash fury on anyone who dares to trespass.
What we thought: This is another we experienced at Six Flags Scream Break earlier this year but that version was Condemned “House Party” and I think that colored our opinion of this one. The House Party was a lot of dumb fun whereas this felt kind of boring in comparison. The sets are all well done and I enjoy the use of crouching and other mechanics of getting through the house, but it felt like just a lot of yelling and loud noises to constitute scares. I almost feel like it needs some eerie background music or something (not that any Six Flags mazes have those but it could truly help a lot of them). It’s not bad, per se, and really feels like a haunt maze in a smaller park.
Aftermath: Nocturnal Hunt (NEW!)
RATING: 🎃🎃⚫⚫⚫
What it is: Three hundred years after a devastating zombie outbreak, Ash City lies in ruins. Guests will stumble into the breeding grounds of the Nocturnals, the former infected who have evolved into bioluminescent predators. In a desperate attempt to escape, will you be hunting them or are they hunting you?
What we thought: I’m still not sure how I feel about this one, though I know I liked it more than some other mazes. Having it in an open-air situation was kind of cool. It’s the first time we’d been in a maze where we could walk side by side because the pathway was so wide. It seemed like one that was harder for some actors to really hide in because of the openness, though. I don’t know that we really got scared at all in this one but it was another one where we could banter with the scare actors as they followed us down the path. One of them offered me his brightly lit teeth in exchange for my soul or something, so I can’t not love that kind of thing. Overall, it was just fine and kinda gave the aura of a haunt at a local corn maze.
Sewer of Souls
RATING: 🎃🎃⚫⚫⚫
What it is: Stumble into an underground world where the air is thick with the despair of lost souls and the darkness is alive with unseen terrors. Guests will be left to navigate through the terrifying tunnels where evil oozes and fear thrives with every step.
What we thought: We’d been hearing about this maze for years from other attendees of Fright Fest and it was about what we expected it to be. One of the things we’d heard is that there was an “odor,” to say the least, to the maze since you are, in fact, in a sewer, but we were surprised to find that not the case. This is one I think we hit at an off time because it seemed like there were maybe 6 scare actors in the whole thing. They were, however, giving it their all. I did really like the use of different levels and the weird inflatable bag things to make it seem like you were traversing the sewer system.
Army of the Dead (NEW!)
RATING: 🎃⚫⚫⚫⚫
What it is: The City of Las Vegas is under lockdown following a recent viral outbreak and survivors must look for an escape while battling the undead.
What we thought: Cards on the table, we have not seen this Zack Snyder film, but we knew it involved Zombies and Vegas and that’s about all the maze offers. The front entrance is impressive with fire shot up periodically and fairly large exterior set pieces. Once inside though, we were left wanting. In our run-through, there didn’t seem to be many scare actors, which kind of takes away from the Army in the title. The ones we did see, came at the crowd with no sound effects or noises of any kind, just the continuous loop of “Viva Las Vegas.” There were several rooms of dead space and we really only got scared near the end because we didn’t expect anyone to come out and actually try to scare us. If I didn’t know this was supposed to be based on an IP, I would have just thought it was a random Vegas/Zombie mashup.
This maze was also closed for a large portion of the event because of “technical difficulties” and we’re still not 100% sure what that meant or what even could be wrong in the maze to warrant a closure (Aftermath was also down at the same time so maybe something weird in that area).
Stranger Things (NEW!)
RATING: 🎃⚫⚫⚫⚫
What it is: The students of Hawkins High decide to team up to create a little innocent Halloween fun for their community – but things quickly turn upside down and morph into something far darker.
What we thought: We spent a lot of our hour-long drive home talking about what wasted potential this haunt had. We already knew the ending was a very silly Vecna on a stick, but the vibes were just not there all around, especially for a franchise that’s whole deal is vibes. The lack of recognizable characters was also unfortunate. The only three we saw were Eddie (who I nearly missed), one Demogorgon (and another that was supposed to pop up but wasn’t working), a young Vecna, and everyone’s favorite Strange Things character, Vecna’s Mom… I guess? No Elevens, none of the other kids; it was a strange choice. The scares all came from generic moss-like creatures that aren’t even a thing in the show. We were looking forward to this one but left it underwhelmed.
Also, if you have any kind of sensitivity to particulates, you may want to pack a mask. The effects of the dust-like atmosphere of the Upside Down are really effective, but we felt like we were coughing up whatever they were pumping out for the rest of the night (we were told it was just heavier than normal fog, but I don’t know, man).
Scare Zones
Nearly nowhere is safe walking around the park. New scare zones this year include: Plaza de la Muerte which brings together the eerie and vibrant traditions of Día de los Muertos. Underworlds of Oz explores a darker; twisted version of Oz where enchantments turn nightmarish; and Grimmlore Ridge which is a realm of shadowy branches and the haunting calls of ravens.
Popular scare zones from last year have also returned including City Under Siege with clowns causing chaos with sinister laughter and unsettling grins. CarnivHELL features a circus overrun by carnivorous carnies; Nightmares: A Twisted Fantasy presents childhood stories turned into unsettling nightmares; Devil’s Triangle takes you into the ocean’s depths, haunted by the souls lost there; The Deadzone is overrun by cyberpunk zombies feeding on the unwary; and Exile Hill which is filled with sinister souls lurking in the dark passage.
