CHIP ‘N DALE: RESCUE RANGERS dropped its first official trailer today offering a first solid hint of what exactly is coming to this
reboot comeback that has been 30 years in the making.
Could the film have been all 2D animation like its 90s origin? Maybe all CG? Would it be a CG live action hybrid like ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS? Of all the options available the one we suspected least is the actual answer… it’s set in the very meta universe in which humans and toons co-exist as established in WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT! Not a world LIKE Roger Rabbit — in the actual universe in which he and Toon Town exist!
The trailer remains pretty light on story specifics while at the same time showing A LOT of the humor and gags that we can come to expect in the upcoming adventure dropping May 20, 2022 on Disney+. Here’s a look at several glimpses that caught our eyes.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit’s Universe
The film takes place in the hybrid world where humans and toons co-exist and yes it’s the same universe with Roger Rabbit in it! One of the themes touched on in the original ROGER RABBIT film was the notion of outdated toons co-existing with newer styles (Betty Boop famously makes a cameo with commentary on black and white characters no longer being en vogue) and this continues with Dale having had “some work done” to become a CG-style star. Plus, you can see it looks like the Rescue Rangers was filmed on cartoony sets just like Roger Rabbit
Mixing and Matching Characters
One of the most notable achievements of ROGER RABBIT was co-existing characters from different studios and that trend continues from what we can see in the new trailer with tongue-in-cheek jabs at both animated and CG characters including the recent live-action CATS and the incessantly adorable MY LITTLE PONY characters.
It’s no secret that kids of the 90s are EXTREMELY nostalgic and this movie will deliver quite handily. Whether its Roger Rabbit doing the Roger Rabbit on the dance floor or — brace for it — MC Skat Cat tearing it up with Paula Abdul, there’s going to be plenty of leonardo-dicaprio-pointing-at-tv.gif moments in this new film. Also looks like Scrooge is still swimming in vats of gold, too! So where are the Gummis, Gargoyles and Darkwing?
Walt Disney World
The Rescue Rangers crew went to Walt Disney World back in the heyday of their show. The only thing that would have made that better was them going to Disneyland where there was an actual Disney Afternoon Avenue where the stars were prominently featured and with not just one but two separate attractions in Mickey’s Toontown!
Darkwing, Hemsworth, Mighty Mouse?
The trailer features a ton of recognizable cameos but there’s much, much, much more to be included without question. For one, we spotted a jar of Veg-E-Might in the fridge which clearly seems to have an integration of Mighty Mouse in his trademark red and yellow super suit. Plus, we have last year’s teaser poster with a HEAVY lean on the Marvel and specifically Chris Hemsworth plus references to Darkwing Duck. This movie is gonna be bananas — or I guess it’s gonna be nuts!
