Disney-Pixar’s LUCA is such a wholesome and delightful film and although it didn’t have the glory of a theatrical release, it’s now ready to come into your home via digital, 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™ and DVD starting today! MouseInfo had the chance to screen a review copy that was sent over complimentarily for an honest take.
So what is the honest take? Well, there’s not a lot here in terms of quantity but the quality of the little that we DO get helps make up some of the difference.
As to be expected, there are deleted scenes that are included and they are prefaced with an overall introduction by the film’s director, Enrico Casarosa. His passion shines through as shares parts and process of bringing this endearing film to life. He also gives insights into each deleted moment with clip-specific introductions — some of the scenes are quite long (and in storyboard form) but they paint quite a different direction the film could have taken!
The rest of the bonus features? Well, technically there are three but in essence, they could all be summed up as parts of a single behind-the-scenes documentary. There’s great care and detail in each one which respectively go into the film’s primary location in Italy, plus the underwater mythical backbone, and the three main protagonists and their friendship.
Over and again, each of the films emphasizes director Enrico Casarosa’s insistence on a methodical and appreciative approach with slower, quiet reveries baked in as part of the unique components. Below are breakdowns of the three main featurettes, courtesy of Disney.
- Our Italian Inspiration invites you to experience the joy of discovery as Pixar artists travel to Cinque Terre, Italy, to absorb the beauty and culture of the coastal region which inspired the characters and the quintessential Italian backdrop of “Luca.”
- Secretly A Sea Monster explores the artistry and technical innovation of Luca’s transformation from sea monster to human, and how the theme of transformation is central to the emotional journey of the main characters.
- Best Friends featurette goes into the challenges, inspiration, annoyances, and encouragement of having best friends. The cast and crew of “Luca” share their own stories about how besties influenced their lives, and how those experiences informed the creation of screen pals Luca, Alberto and Giulia.
