She came, she saw, she conquered. CAPTAIN MARVEL made a thunderous debut earlier this year into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a triumphant return in AVENGERS: ENDGAME and now in her first solo feature, she’s ready to come home. We were sent an advance review copy to peruse and found a surprisingly robust assortment of extras to enjoy.

Blu-ray & Digital:

Introduction (by directors/screenwriters Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck) and Audio Commentary (again by directors/screenwriters Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck) are available right off the bat. The former was a surprising departure than we’re used to with the film introductions featuring behind-the-scenes footage and actual filmed footage of the directors talking about the film. This is a really cool way to delve deeper into these kinds of films and see the faces behind it all. It’s certainly not going to sway sales but is a nice change of pace.

And although we didn’t get to dive into the Commentary, we do know after hearing them talk about the project first-hand at the film’s Los Angeles press conference it’s clear there was a lot of excitement and care that went into handling this very important film in the MCU.

Making-Of Featurettes

One of our biggest pet peeves of late with taking a look at bonus features digitally on Movies Anywhere has been a slap-dash organization of the bonus materials in random unsorted buckets and for this release it was wonderful to see a well organized assortment of extras.

As far as the content within, it’s the usual assortment of well-crafted extras that bounce back and forth between movie clips, behind-the-scenes footage, and interviews with the cast and crew. Each varies in length between about 3 -7 minutes making for a great a la carte selection of features to dive into the film.

Special shoutout to the last of the features (Hiss-sterical Cat-titude) which takes us to FULLSCREEN format and looks like it’s been ripped straight from the highest quality VHS recording, complete with ripples, static, low-def visuals, and cheesy 90s graphics. I eat this stuff up and would have loved it if they’d done the entire set of featurettes in this way.

  • The Origin of Nick Fury – Witness some of the MCU’s most significant events through Nick Fury’s eyes, and see how his influence helped shape the MCU.
  • The Dream Team – Discover why Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck are the perfect pair to direct Marvel Studios’ most powerful hero.
  • The Skrulls and the Kree – Take a deeper look into the Skrulls and the Kree, their ongoing conflict, and the importance of shifting perspectives in the film.
  • Hiss-sterical Cat-titude – The cast and crew dish on working with Goose and the raw talent it takes to portray such a complex character on-screen.

Digital Exclusive Making-Of

It’s no surprise why these two featurettes are digital exclusives, they’re clearly the best of the mix (although the Goose cat featurette above comes close), at least to my interests. The HOWS and WHERES of movie making are my favorite part. Show me wireframes, show me pre-vis, show me concept art, I’m all about it and that’s what we get here.

I could literally watch before and after sliders for an hour. It’s just fascinating seeing how the iconic visuals on screen come to life!

  • What Makes a Memory: Inside the “Mind Frack” – What does it take to craft an action-packed sequence for a Marvel Studios film? Nothing short of an epic team effort!

Gag Reel always remains a fun and always too-short selection of outtakes and flubs from the set.

Deleted Scenes remain an always interesting look into the film. The “No Smile” scene in particular is an interesting cut as it shows an already aggressive Danvers seem almost  — perhaps deservedly so — excessively relentless with her heckler.

• “Who Do You Admire Above All Others?” – Kree Commander Yon-Rogg must answer to the Supreme Intelligence, who questions his leadership ability.
• Starforce Recruits – Yon-Rogg lectures a roomful of students on the Kree’s mission to defend all nations from the scourge of the Skrulls.
• Heading to Torfa – Vers (Danvers) and her fellow Starforce members banter as they prepare for their rescue mission to Torfa.
• “What, No Smile?” – In this alternate version of a scene from the movie, Vers is consulting a map when she receives a dubious offer of assistance.
• Black Box – Keller attempts to track Vers and Fury after their escape in a quadjet from the Joint USAFA Facility.
• Rookie Mistake – Novice S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson helps Director Keller out of an embarrassing situation.
