UPDATE 2/11/16: It was announced today that FROZEN‘s pre-Broadway world premiere engagement will be at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts’s Buell Theater in August 2017.
The FROZEN juggernaut continues unabated as Elsa goes for the EGOT! Not content with Oscars and Grammys, she’s set her sights on television and Broadway. Today Disney leadership announced a new TV holiday special featuring the FROZEN characters for ABC, to premiere in December 2017. The film’s voice cast are already at work on the new short, which will be produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. Expect new songs from the film’s composers, Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. The special will be directed by two-time Emmy Award-winning directors Kevin Deters and Stevie Wermers-Skelton (Prep & Landing, Prep & Landing: Operation Secret Santa), and will be produced by Oscar Award-winner Roy Conli (Big Hero 6).
In addition, FROZEN will open on Broadway as a new, expanded stage musical in spring 2018, with a pre-Broadway engagement at the Buell Theater in Denver, Colorado, beginning August 2017. Director Alex Timbers (Rocky, Peter and the Starcatcher) will helm the production for Disney Theatrical, with new songs added to the original score. Peter Darling (Matilda) choreographs, with scenic and costume design by Bob Crowley (Mary Poppins, Tarzan) and music supervision by Stephen Oremus (Wicked, The Wiz Live).
An unrelated and shortened live musical adaptation of the film will open at Disney California Adventure in the Hyperion Theater this June. The theme park show has a different creative team headed up by director Liesl Tommy (Eclipsed), and has been developed independently of the Broadway musical.
Will you be tuning in to see how Elsa and friends celebrate the holidays next year? And will you be ready to see Olaf on the Broadway stage? We know we’ll be!
