Olaf is one busy little snowman. After making his debut at Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Paris, the self-walking magical snowman set his sights on 2026 D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event! We had the chance to see a demonstration of the incredibly impressive tech developed by Walt Disney Imagineering up close!

Here’s a look at what we got to see during a self-walking Olaf demonstration at 2026 D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event (formerly D23 Expo) taking place from August 14 – 16, 2026.

The new Olaf is a fully autonomous, self-walking robotic figure developed by Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development  in collaboration with Disney Research Zurich. The next-generation robotic character is able to emote and interact directly with park guests using the reinforcement learning (RL) dynamic walking pipeline. He reacts in real-time to his environment, capable of moving around and ensuring safe and efficient movement.

Long-time Disney Parks fans might remember Lucky the Dinosaur which fittingly was an early evolution of the technology we see today with Olaf. Lucky served as the first all-electric actuated animatronic, switching from noisy hydraulics to allow characters to detach from the floor and freely walk through the parks.

Here’s some of the behind-the-scenes details on the tech that helps bring Imagineering’s innovations like the self-walking Olaf to life:

  • Imagineering uses RL to train bipedal and non-traditional robotic characters in physics simulations before loading neural networks onto physical hardware.
  • Simulation compresses testing time significantly, compressing approximately 10,000 hours of motion and balance training into a matter of days and reducing character development timelines from years to months.
  • Development shifted from building idealized mechanical systems to building fast, 3D-printed prototypes with off-the-shelf actuators, letting software and RL adapt to physical imperfections and joint dynamics.
