Downtown Disney is currently home to a special Art Walk commemorate the Disneyland 70th Anniversary. Celebrating seven decades of the Happiest Place on Earth the artwork explores a rich history spanning the 1950s to the 2020s. Each decade features a piece of artwork that highlights an artist, their chosen medium, and a summary of their creative approach to capturing the spirit of their assigned decade.
Here’s a closer look at the Disneyland 70th Anniversary Art Walk in Downtown Disney.
1950’s
Brittney Collins
Medium: Digital
Keyword: Wonder
Artist Approach: To me, this decade was defined by the spirit of the park’s creators, who worked against all odds to create and build the dream that was Disneyland. I typically consider myself a facilitator of art rather than an artist myself, so creating this piece required me to move beyond where I was comfortable and allow myself to be driven by wonder rather than fear.
1960’s
Tim Wollweber
Medium: Digital
Keyword: Innovation
Artist Approach: I looked to the bold designs of 60s Disney animated features like The Sword in the Stone and 101 Dalmatians for my inspiration. The background designs of Ken Anderson and Walt Peregoy in 101 Dalmatians especially influenced how I approached the Enchanted Tiki Room and the Haunted Mansion here. I wanted to show my excitement and joy in these groundbreaking 60s innovations.
1970’s
Lauren Gregorio
Medium: Digital
Keyword: Togetherness
Artist Approach: This decade contains so many awe-inspiring attractions and shows, so I strived to emphasize the spectacle of each one. Combining gouache and digital mediums, I wanted to marry the work I do for Disneyland with my love for painting outdoors to showcase the magical feeling we get experiencing attractions like these both back then and now together!
1980’s
Isaac Perez
Medium: Digital
Keyword: Spectacle
Artist Approach: My approach is 1800’s vibrant retro futurism. I took a lot of inspiration from the music and fun aesthetics of the 1980s and the way it revolutionized the way we represent ourselves. This piece makes me believe that anything that you put your mind to you can accomplish, even if it’s the most imaginative dream that you have. If you are brave enough to follow your dreams, the payoff is worth it in the end.
1990’s
Ronny Johnson
Medium: Acrylic and Ink
Keyword: Expansion
Artist Approach: When I think of the 1990s, I think of bold vibrance, patterns, geometry and vivid movement throughout all aspects of society. The 90s gave rise to the cultural growth of Hip Hop and the expansion of technology – internet, websites, CDs, etc. Expansion for me symbolizes the explosive growth of ideas, innovations, and dreams flowing from their origins into larger, diverse and newer adventures and experiences.
2000’s
Lysa Ashley
Medium: Acrylics
Keyword: Nostalgia
Artist Approach: To celebrate Downtown Disney’s 25th anniversary, I created this piece to illustrate how families and friends come together from all over the world to enjoy food, fun entertainment, and so much more. The goal was to create a piece that would shine bright with joy!
2010’s
William Zin
Medium: Acrylic and Chalk
Keyword: Immersion
Artist Approach: As you travel back in time to the 2010s, this era marked the rise of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, as well as a number of spin-offs inspired by the franchise. It was a decade of exploration into the galaxy, as we immersed our imaginations deep into an unknown and infinite space. This thinking inspired my painting, in which the viewer becomes part of the art, a space traveler inside a spaceship. The hand you see is your own, reaching out space. And you, the viewer, the space traveler, are in control.
2020’s
Carissa Mordeno Paccarelli
Medium: Acrylic, Markers, Spray Paint, Digital
Keyword: Forward
Artist Approach: Artist’s approach: This decade reflects Disney’s evolving future, symbolized by a radiant Mickey silhouette in the sky, guiding two figures toward new worlds of imagination on a glowing path that leads them forward into the future. It features new adventures while Sleeping Beauty Castle connects everything back to Disney’s classic magic. This piece celebrates how the parks continue to grow and create new experiences for everyone who visits.
