Mickey’s Christmas Carol Feast brings the fan-favorite holiday tale to life at Storytellers Cafe at the Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. With Mickey and crew dressed in their iconic outfits from the animated holiday special plus warm and hearty dishes and desserts, you’ll find plenty of Christmas spirit here. We visited Christmas week and are sharing here our thoughts on the experience including meeting the characters, tasting all the food, and overall experience.
Here’s a closer look at Mickey’s Christmas Carol Feast at Storytellers Cafe at the Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.
What to Expect
Mickey’s Christmas Carol Feast at Storyteller’s Café is specifically only available for dinner and reservations to this offering might be some of the hardest to snag this entire year at the Disneyland Resort. We were online bright and early at 5am the second reservations dropped for our visit date and all available times were snatched up within seconds. You have to be quick. Of course, avails might open as existing reservations are canceled but they are very quickly snapped up like Scrooge McDuck by a ghost on a lonely Christmas Eve night.
The menu offers a substantial selection beginning with Cold Selections and appetizers that include poached shrimp, fruit, and a variety of salads. Hot Selections lead the charge with a carving station featuring herb-roasted prime rib and turkey. There’s also other dishes like gochujang pork belly, braised beef short ribs, and salmon along with various vegetables, sides, soups and breads. You can finish your holiday feast with a rotating dessert selection that highlights Eggnog Bread Pudding amongst other sweet treats.
Characters you can expect to see at this offering include Mickey (as Bob Cratchit), Minnie (as Mrs. Cratchit), Goofy (as Marley’s ghost), Uncle Scrooge, and Clarabelle. All guests can get a commemorative button with the restaurant logo.
Pricing comes in at $79 per adult and $42 per child (3-9), plus tax. Prices and selections of course are always subject to change. The restaurant may have variations to their menu depending on availability, always check the official site or Disneyland app on the day of your visit for the latest information.
Review
We’ve had several visits to Storytellers Cafe over the years and if you’ll pardon the pun, we always have our says a Grand old time. However, for the premium that you’re paying on this meal, you should be fully aware of what you get for your dollar as over the course of several visits here, we’ve surmised that your mileage will vary as far as what you get out of the experience. In general, all character meals at this location are very popular but Mickey’s Christmas Carol Feast ups the ante with classic characters in classic holiday outfits making this a very popular (read: crowded) affair.
The food is all cooked in smaller batches and in higher quality than you’d expect from a Disney buffet which is a welcomed approach considering the price tag. The menu is varied and yet the selection is not necessarily incredibly vast. If you have picky eaters in your group, you should really take a close look at the offerings to ensure the offerings will work for your situation (see sample menu below.) Still, Disney does their best to cater to all tastes with simple standbys including fries, tenders, and pizza available.
The Food
We’re big fans of a carving station and the meats available here were seasoned well and cooked to perfection, served with all the expected accoutrement — and plenty of creamy horseradish for my beef and cranberries for the holiday herb-roasted turkey. The beet salad with vibrant citrus was a favorite at our table and the delicate squash salad with goat cheese and pomegranate is a fresh delight. The Pork Pozole was a rare miss as Disney usually offers this hearty soup in the parks and it usually always hits.
The braised short rib at this location can be hit or miss (often overcooked) but it was perfect on our visit. The crispy pork belly is going to be a polarizing choice since it’s a fatty piece of meat in general but it’s got great flavors. There was also a phenomenal butternut squash ravioli that had a cheese sauce that was almost worth the price of admission. The salmon and barbecue chicken lolipops did what they needed to do — they were great but nothing specifically standout about them. The fresh poached shrimp were fresh, plump and delicious along with a nice selection of charcuterie with meats, cheeses, olives, and breads.
The absolutely solid selection of charcuterie meats and cheeses is also a really nice touch including fresh whole fruit, strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries. Unfortunately, the small desserts are usually forgettable at this location and the same applies for the holidays HOWEVER the Eggnog Bread Pudding with vanilla sauce is warm welcoming holiday surprise — the eggnog flavor was very subtle and the vanilla sauce is a great complement.
The Characters
We’ve found in past visits that character interactions can be extremely hit or miss and when the event is as popular as this one, seeing all the characters come to your table can be a challenge. Our best recommendation is to keep your eye out for not just the characters but the character hosts and make them your BFFs for your visit. They are doing their best to make sure all five characters get to all tables but the size of the restaurant makes this a lofty challenge. If you can, try to keep tabs with character hosts and make sure your expectations of which characters are highest priority are clear.
It unfortunately can happen that not all characters will come to your table during the course of your seating. If this happens, make sure to find a character host and they will do their best to help you meet your favorite character(s). On this visit, it did happen to us that Goofy had never made it to our table. The character host advised they would do their best to get him to visit our table soon so we took extra special time eating our dessert and luckily Goofy did eventually come. We’ve also had the experience in the past that we were asked to wait at the front of the restaurant and character hosts brought characters out to us here, as well. We also noticed this happen several times with several groups over the course of our meal.
Ultimately, your mileage will vary because we’ve also come to Storytellers and had every single character come to our table twice during our meal so it’s really luck of the draw. Make sure to have a clear idea of WHICH characters you want to see and make sure to make those intentions clear with the character hosts.
