First and foremost, the ability to watch the touching Once Upon A Studio short over and over again is definitely a selling point of this release but there’s a lot that Disney got right for this home release of the film.
Although many may argue about the merits of the film itself, one thing we were incredibly excited to see was a full-blown MAKING OF documentary — a feature that used to be a mainstay of films so lovingly crafted by the studio. For WISH, we get a return to form with the 100 Years In The Making feature. It’s always such a treat to hear from filmmakers and the round-robin style chat plus the interviews featured help craft a really in depth look at what it took to bring the film to life. The documentary is is separated into the chapters, outlined below by Disney
- What Makes Disney, Disney – Learn what makes a Disney film and its characters so distinct, memorable and beloved. Discover how Asha and WISH are quintessentially Disney — from the extraordinary challenges Asha must overcome, to the magical, Kingdom of Rosa
-
The Wish Equation – What is a wish? Join the filmmakers for a surprising conversation as they break down the “Wish Equation,” discuss the “rules of magic,” and describe the role music plays in Disney films. Then hear Julia Michaels’ own original demo of “This Wish.”
- Looking Backward To Go Forward – Walk the aisles of the Walt Disney Animation Research Library as the filmmakers “draw” inspiration from 100 years of animation. Learn about the “Pinocchio test,” and how Wish’s design blends new technology with classic techniques.
- Where Dreams And Reality Collide – Discover the times and places that were the inspiration for Rosas and helped build the world of this original fairy tale.
- Asha Means Wish – Learn all about Asha, from her inspired design to her boundless determination and generosity. Uncover the subtle symbolism in her jewelry, and dive into her dancing skills. See how she’s imperfectly perfect and what makes her a memorable Disney hero.
- The Return Of The Disney Villain – You’ll love to hate King Magnifico when you uncover his secrets. Find out what makes him the classic Disney villain — and why he doesn’t wear a crown.
-
Star Is Born – Uncover early concept drawings to see how Star evolved into Asha’s lovable wish facilitator. Learn about Star’s sparkles, and why Star can communicate with Asha and the other characters.
- Those Who Stand Beside Me – Learn more about Asha’s closest allies, Dahlia and Valentino. Find out which of Snow White’s seven companions served as inspiration for Dahlia, and how Valentino breaks one of the rules of Disney animals.
- When Wishes Come True – Get to know the kids inside the filmmakers as the creators of WISH reflect on what Disney movies meant to them growing up, and what it’s like being part of the Disney legacy today.
There’s a few other extra features which make a nice supplement to all of the behind-the-scenes details in the full-length documentary. WISH D-Classified is a fun look aimed at the kiddos but absolutely has us enthralled with a quick look at several of the hidden tributes to the Disney Company’s 100 year legacy including a whole bunch of hidden Mickeys. It doesn’t even try to count them all but it offers a bunch of great ones that you surely missed on first watch of the film. Producer Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster-Jones had mentioned to us at a press event for the film that the running tally is easily more than 80.
Of course, Outtakes are always a fun glimpse into the filmmaking process — or in this case, into the recording booth — for a look the fun and funny moments of making the film. Everyone on the main cast is featured here which is a nice touch.
There is so much lore and various plot threads that were explored for this story — as there are any many Disney animated features — and we get to take in a few of these plot lines with the Deleted Scenes outlined below.
-
- Magnifico’s Secret
- The Wishing Tree
- To Rosas
- Finding Flazino
- Valentino Is A Star
It’s not unusual to get deleted scenes in a home release of a film but a Deleted Song is rarer and that’s what we have with “A Wish Worth Making.” Sung by Saba Sabino (voiced by Victor Garber), it expresses the feeling of being reunited with one’s true wish. Directors Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn provide context for the song’s removal. Despite being cut from the film, it still became the title track of the soundtrack, sung by songwriter Julia Michaels.
MORE INFO: WATCH: Deleted song from WISH is amongst many bonus features coming to the home release
The home release offers an a la carte approach to enjoying the catchy tunes with the Song Selection feature allowing you to jump instantly to favorite songs with on-screen lyrics displayed. You can also opt to watch the Sing Along version of the movie which will play the whole film with thee lyric on-screen.

- At All Costs

- I’m A Star
- This Is The Thanks I Get?!
- Knowing What I Know Now
- This Wish (Reprise)
While the documentary has us gushing, there’s still so much more Disney could have provided here but we won’t be selfish. Still, one-off interviews with each member of the cast, closer looks at production artwork,, there’s so much more we want from these home releases but WISH is at least a solid entry into the home release market!
See it for Yourself
WISH is available now on digital and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD.
