After just barely missing its grand opening last year due to the pandemic, we finally got our first look this week at the brand new Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash! attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood! The attraction soft opened for “technical rehearsals” during our visit to Taste of Universal and we were able to get full video and photos of the entire queue and attraction itself.
About the Attraction
The attraction puts you into the shoes (paws?) of stray puppies on an adventure through the world of the hit Illumination animated features SECRET LIFE OF PETS and SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2. The experience truly begins the second you step into the apartment building lobby and meander through a queue that instantly brings you into the world of the film.
There are more than 64 animated figures that you’ll encounter between the queue and attraction itself bringing to life favorite characters including Max, Gidget, Snowball, Chloe, Duke, and more. To enhance the experience, there are also several points on the journey that effectively utilize special effects including projection mapping on physical sets and screens.
The attraction features an impressive cast who all reprise their roles from the films including Patton Oswalt as Max, Kevin Hart as Snowball, Eric Stonestreet as Duke, Jenny Slate as Gidget, Tiffany Haddish as Daisy, Lake Bell as Chloe, Dana Carvey as Pops, Steve Coogan as Ozone, Chris Renaud as Norman, Hannibal Buress as Buddy, Bobby Moynihan as Mel, Jessica DiCicco as Princess and Tara Strong as Pickles.
Virtual Line technology is an important component of the experience. In order to ride, guests must have a Virtual Line return time. Guests can access Virtual Line via the official Universal Studios Hollywood app (available for free on Google Play and in the App Store) or they can visit the physical Virtual Line kiosk located in the New York City subway station that situated immediately adjacent to the ride entrance.
Both options provide guests with options to experience the ride based on the next available times and will be available to guests within the theme park as needed.
There’s a sample ride vehicle outside so you can check before you wait in line if you will be comfortable within the vehicle and its restraints.
From Captain Snowball’s briefing you head to the attraction loading area.
Hungry for more of the queue?
We have TONS more pics of the queue including detail shots of the book shelves, artwork, and more!
The cameras in the camera store show that YOU are a puppy. When you see your puppy self on screen it will match your actions if you move your head, arms, and body.
Time for a bath!
After you get your bath it’s time to get adopted! On one of our ride throughs we were adopted by a multi-racial family with two moms! NICE! There were families of different races and makeups which was really nice to see.
