Disney California Adventure is once again celebrating the Lunar New Year and this year it’s the YEAR OF THE PIG! You can immerse yourself in a bunch of returning favorites including tasty Festival Marketplaces stalls offering unique and bold flavors, beautiful entertainment, and more.
Take a look at everything you need to know about the Disney California Adventure 2019 Lunar New Year Celebration…
Tasty New Year
There’s a bunch of tasty ways to celebrate the Lunar New Year. There are four Marketplace stalls offering a variety of tasty treats inspired by Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean cuisine.
Crispy Shrimp Fried Rice ($8) was one of our favorite dishes. Very salty but great flavors here with the richness of the bacon and the crispy shrimp on top paired with rice and edmame making for a really pleasing dish.
Mickey Chinese Hot Dog Bun ($6.50) is a great dish if you get it when it’s fresh. The freshness of the bread here is crucial to the success of the dish so if you happen to be at the booth when a fresh batch has arrived then you should find yourself pleased with the offering.
Steamed Short Rib Shumai ($7.75) is a good dish but not all together a must-have. There’s nothing really to criticize here although the dish doesn’t really standout as a must-try either. Perhaps a bolder seasoning in the filling — which itself was very moist and tasty — would have made a more lasting impression.
Pan-fried Wheat Noodles with Chicken Meatballs ($7.25) are a surprisingly tasty dish. If you imagine a classic chow-mein you’ve had a thousand times that’s about what you can expect here. The chicken meatballs are a unique contrast here adding a meaty punch.
Mandarin Orange-Green Tea Tart ($5.50) is beautiful in its simplicity. The light custard underneath provides a lovely sweetness that pairs with the tartness of the raspberries and mandarin oranges. We were surprised with the simple explosion of flavor with this treat!
Orchid Spritz ($5.75) should not be as surprisingly tasty as it is. The delightfully refreshing beverage combines SmartWater Sparkling with orchid syrup and rose popping pearls and is topped with an orchid flower.
Vietnamese Iced Coffee ($5.50) is a tasty and refreshing pick-me-up with a thick creamy bottom that you can stir into control the sweetness of your drink.
Glowing Lotus Flower “cubes” can be purchased for $5.99.
Full Festival Marketplace Menus
Here’s a full look at what you can find. As with previous festivals, you can purchase a Sip & Savor Pass for $36 which gives you 6 tabs to use on any non-alcoholic option at each booth. As long as you’re purchasing items that worth more than $6 each, you’ll be coming out with a savings off paying the full price.
More to Taste
Aside from the Festival Marketplaces you can head to Paradise Garden Grill for a few more tasty bites…
Entertainment
It’s the Year of the Pig and although you can’t meet and greet with the Three Little Pigs in their ADORABLE Lunar New Year wardrobe, you CAN see them in an expanded Mulan’s Lunar New Year Procession which takes place now in Paradise Park instead of on the Performance Corridor near Paradise Gardens.
The move of this entertainment offering to Paradise Park doesn’t do much to address our frustrations every year with suitable viewing of the show. While it’s greatly expanded in this area it’s still not much easier to get a good place to see what’s going on. Truly unfortunate. Perhaps a Viva Navidad format would be better? Here’s a few images of the gorgeous offering, courtesy of Disney:
Live entertainment still takes place near Paradise Gardens.
You never know who you might see in the Paradise Gardens character greeting area!
