THE LION KING Producer Don Hahn, treated D23 EXPO attendees yesterday with some new footage for the upcoming THE LION GUARD television show and movie coming to Disney Channel. The show seems to be a beautiful return to more dimensional 2D animation similar to that of the actual original film. In celebration of the new show, Beau Black took to the Center Stage to perform the show’s title song.

The clips shown were quite fantastic and a welcome change. Of late, television for children seems to focus almost exclusively on either CG or super stylized flat-looking 2D format so to see the beautiful trademark Disney depth and roundness in this cartoon was absolutely refreshing.

It actually LOOKS spectacular, pairing just as well against the original feature or at least as good as (if not better than) the few “cheapquels” that followed the 1995 box office juggernaut.

The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar will be a 1-hour movie on Disney Channel debuting November 2015 and it will be followed by a television series on Disney Junior in January 2016.

ABOUT
Set in the African Savanna, “The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar” follows Kion, the second-born cub of Simba and Nala, as he assembles the members of the Lion Guard. While traditionally the Lion Guard has been comprised of lions known to be the fiercest, bravest, fastest, strongest and keenest of sight in the Pride Lands, Kion breaks tradition by instead calling upon some of his friends who he believes best exemplify these heroic qualities.

Throughout the movie and the series, the diverse team of young animals will learn how to utilize each of their unique abilities to solve problems and accomplish tasks to maintain balance within the Circle of Life, while also introducing young viewers to the vast array of animals that populate the prodigious African landscape.
