MOANA has crossed the ocean and is charting a course straight into your living room for its home release. With a hosted review copy of the film, we took a look at the exclusive bonus content including behind-the-scenes featurettes and a sing-along version of the movie. The film follows the illustrious young wayfinder who sets sail on a journey to restore prosperity to her island.

The film was first available for purchase in Digital on September 8 and is now available in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD starting October 6. Despite having a hosted copy, we are sharing our honest thoughts here. Also, It’s important to note that MouseInfo is an Amazon Affiliate so qualifying purchases made from this page may be eligible for commission.

The digital and physical home release promise several bonus features including a sing-along version of the film, a behind-the-scenes look everything from costumes and sets to casting and music rounded out with interviews with cast and filmmakers. Alternative purchase formats for this release include:

  • A limited-edition 4K UHD SteelBook with special packaging featuring Dwayne Johnson as Maui, Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana, Pua, and Heihei.
  • A 3-Movie Collection bundle containing the live-action MOANA, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ MOANA, and MOANA 2

This home release surprisingly packs quite a wallop with the breadth of it’s scope. The Sing-Along version of the movie is cute with lyrics that play on screen and you also have the option to select individual songs to play a la carte but where the extras shine are the featurettes. Although listed as several pieces of different bonus materials, the seven featurettes all string together to form one nearly 1-hour long making-of documentary into the making of the film. We were truly surprised to see the care that went not just into the movie itself but the actual documentary. Perhaps most stunning was the fact that Moana’s village of Motunui was built on a farm in the far away lands of *checks notes* Georgia. There’s a big emphasis on the craftsmanship and sustainability of the production but we do get a few small peeks at the widely used blue screen effects used for this production. We haven’t enjoyed a Disney making-of documentary like this in quite some time, it’s almost worth the price of admission for this home release.
