STAR WARS: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU is ready to trek across the outer rim and into your living room for its brand-new home release. Picking up from adventures on Disney+, the theatrical film sees the fledgling New Republic working to protect everything the Rebellion fought for following the fall of the evil Empire; to help their cause, they enlist the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young apprentice Grogu. With a hosted review copy of the film, we took at look at the exclusive bonus content made up of behind-the-scenes featurettes.

The film was first available for purchase in Digital on July 21 and is now available in 4K UHD and Blu-ray starting August 25. The digital and physical home release promise several bonus features including numerous featurettes and audio commentary. Collectible versions of 4K UHD are available in a SteelBook and in the special Beskar Collector’s Edition (U.S. only), which includes special packaging and metal posters.

This home release surprised us featuring not just the standard mix of several YouTube-ready featurettes about random topics but also a full-fledged 19-minute piece on crafting the film. Jon Favreau is so invested in this world so it’s probably no surprise that even the behind-the-scenes pieces showcase an actual attention to detail that fans are actually going to want to watch. When you have an entire segments going deeper into things like the foley work and stop-motion animation, you know there’s truly nerdy creatives at work here and it makes that much more enjoyable.

The smaller featurettes pack some heft to them too like the Biomes piece which gives us a peek at the incredible lengths Disney took to craft tangible practical sets which really helps ground this story as a proper Star Wars film. From having the Maldo Kreis ice planet sets be actually cold, the swampy sets being humid and foggy, we get to see plenty of the references used for both real-world places and environs seen in the original films. The passion and investment that Favreau shows to the tiniest details really shows in the final gorgeous visuals we end up with on screen. Similarly, Welcome to Shakari takes a look at crafting a more urban world that is just teeming with personality and world-building details brought to life not just with practical sets but also clever use of the Volume/VOID technology to literally push out the practical boundaries of this galaxy. We also get peeks into the creature building from the CG-built simian-like Hugo Durant or the prosthetics-heavy red-skinned Burg. Dejarik for Real really showcases the nerdom going into the not-so-subtle reveal of the real-world Dejarik game board arena built for the movie and the twisted menagerie of creatures that inhabit it.
