It’s hard to believe but George Lucas made his FIRST San Diego Comic-Con appearance this past weekend for the 2025 event taking Hall H by storm to discuss the power of illustrated storytelling and offer a sneak peek of the upcoming Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

Here’s some of what we learned at the “Sneak Peek: Lucas Museum of Narrative Art” panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2025.

The panel was moderated by the multi-faceted Queen Latifah and featured legendary filmmaker George Lucas, Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro, and Academy Award-winning artist Doug Chiang.

Below are some of the highlights from the rousing conversation.

  • The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, co-founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, is set to open in 2026 in Los Angeles.
  • The museum will be the world’s first museum fully dedicated to narrative art, encompassing storytelling from ancient cave drawings to children’s books, comic books, and digital media.
  • Queen Latifah emphasized the emotional power of narrative art, linking it to the personal and creative journeys of the panelists.
  • George Lucas, who has collected narrative art for over 50 years, described the museum as “a temple to the people’s art,” emphasizing the role of illustration in shaping societal belief systems.
  • Guillermo del Toro, a board member of the museum, compared narrative art to rock-n-roll and advocated for its preservation as a vital cultural force.
  • Del Toro also garnered rousing applause for decrying AI generated artwork “”Art doesn’t come in a fucking app,” he exclaimed
  • Doug Chiang, Lucasfilm’s Senior VP and Executive Design Director, credited comic and magazine illustration with sparking his love of art and praised the museum for elevating often-overlooked creators.
  • Key pieces in the museum’s collection include the first-ever Flash Gordon comic strip, an original splash page from Black Panther (1968), and Peanuts strips from the 1950s and ’60s.
