Earlier this summer, Knott’s Berry Farm debuted what some might call the scariest thing fans will see this haunt season: a cashier-less store. Located in the Boardwalk area just off the Charleston Circle, the new M&T’s on the Go Refreshments is a small stall offering snacks, drinks sundries…. and no human ineractions.
At face value, the store is like a giant vending machine… with air conditioning. Still, others may question the cost-saving measure of not staffing locations by humans. The concept isn’t novel by this point following the introduction of Amazon Go in 2016 which implemented the “Just Walk Out” concept of human-less transactions.
According to the OCR, the store gets its name from Marion and Toni, two daughters of Knott’s founders Walter and Cordelia. The name of the two siblings has also previously been used for a dress shop on the properly.
This is also not the first time that the park has debuted fundamentally significant changes to its operations. In 2021, Knott’s adopted a completely cashless policy for payments throughout the park. With the changeover, they introduced several Cash-to-Card kiosks around the park offering no-fee transactions to transfer cash to a prepaid Visa cards that can be used anywhere, not just at the park.
A store of this kind is not a first in the theme park space, either. Now-parent company Six Flags introduced similar stores in their parks in 2023.
