Here’s everything we learned about ILM StageCraft at the 2024 D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.

Industrial Light & Magic’s (ILM) StageCraft is a revolutionary virtual production technology that has redefined how films and television shows are made. StageCraft utilizes large, high-resolution LED screens to create immersive environments that surround the actors and set. This allows filmmakers to shoot scenes with realistic lighting and reflections directly on set and “in camera”, reducing the need for green screens and extensive post-production work. By combining real-time rendering of digitally produced backgrounds along with physical set dressing and props, StageCraft enables directors to visualize and capture the final look of a scene during filming, which enhances creative decision-making and overall efficiency. It also gives actors a more visceral sense of the spaces in which their characters are supposed to be inhabiting

StageCraft gained widespread attention with its use in THE MANDALORIAN, where it was employed to create a wide variety of distance worlds and environments in a galaxy far, far away. The technology not only improved visual fidelity of the on-screen image but also allowed for greater flexibility in production scheduling and location shooting, as entire scenes could be filmed in a controlled studio environment. This approach has since been adopted by other major productions including “THE BATMAN,” “THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER,” and “OBI-WAN KENOBI.”
