Holotiles are an exciting new piece of the Imagineering technology being developed for Disney Parks and Experiences and you can get an up close look at the impressive new creation at the Imagineering: Behind the Dreams, Disney Experiences pavilion on the Show Floor at the Anaheim Convention Center for D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.

Here’s what we saw for the holotiles exhibit at the Imagineering: Behind the Dreams, Disney Experiences pavilion at the 2024 D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.

Holotile is a cutting-edge floor technology created by Disney Imagineer Lanny Smoot, designed to let multiple users explore virtual environments by walking in any direction without stepping off the platform. It’s the world’s first multi-user omni-directional floor made of tiles with several little smaller pieces that make the magic. The floor is surrounded by sensors that can detect the location of users or objects on it and control them to keep them on the holotile floor.

This dynamic system features tiles that adapt to movements, providing an immersive experience ideal for VR and beyond. Smoot’s pioneering work with Holotile led to his induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2024, a first for any Disney Imagineer

Although Disney hasn’t exactly indicated how they would use the fancy holotiles, they seem excited at the prospects that the innovative new technology can help create new Disney story telling experiences. At the Pavilion, you can see live demos of Cast Members walking on the tiles and get a hands on look at a small demo where you can control figures on the tiles with a remote control.

Located on the Show Floor (Booth W7 in Hall C) the Imagineering: Behind the Dreams pavilion is a one-of-a-kind pavilion with a peek behind the curtain of favorite offerings under the Disney Experiences umbrella. You’ll find design models, interactive demos, live prototypes, offering the chance to get a first-hand view of the innovative and immersive storytelling from Walt Disney Imagineering.
