Forging the Empire is an absolute delight of behind-the-scenes filmmaking. Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau, Doug Chiang, Andrew Jones and more feature here talking about the epic undertaking of going back into this universe set in a period we hadn’t seen a whole lot of up to that point in 2019 when the series first debuted. The roughly 10-minute piece takes a surprisingly in depth look at the process featuring the absolutely jaw-dropping use of the Volume StageCraft system which simulates many of the environments in the film without needing to build expensive intricate sets. It truly continues to amaze the efforts that can be undertaken with this technology to make convincing environments. There’s also great archival footage and even a look into prop and weapon making. This is a great piece.

Forging the Covert: Part One is the beginning of a broader look at the themes and plot nuances for the Mandoverse. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni amongst other crew talk specifically about building out this world and its characters. We get some great behind-the-scenes look at crafting the various versions of Grogu plus Mando himself and his ship. Like the series it self, this PART ONE bonus feature teases that there’s more to come… if you spring for the next installment. Luckily, we have both seasons released so far….

Like the first season, there are two extras here offering a deeper look into the lore of Mandalore…

Designing the New Republic is the first piece offering another great look into the making of this world. Moving quickly we get quick beats on details for the blasters, the costumes, the tech featured in the show and how it strived for authenticity for the original trilogy look and feel but also blended in everything that’s come into this universe up to that point in the timeline — which, we get on good authority from Doug Chiang is exactly 79 years after the RETURN OF THE JEDI.

Forging the Covert: Part Two is a return to the process of crafting the Mandaoverse with a deeper look at how the second season dives further into the lore. Special attention is put into literally crafting this world including the essence of what Mandalorians are and then deeper into the individual looks for the various characters including Bo Katan and of course, the Dark Saber. The piece ends abruptly after going into a bit of the lore and re-invention of the original Mandalorian… Boba Fett.
