It’s official! The Guardians of the Galaxy are coming to Disney California Adventure! Today during the Marvel Studios panel in Hall H, it was officially confirmed that the portal into Twilight Zone is closing and the unexpectedly popular franchise characters are moving in for Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!
New artwork unveiled offers a peak at just how the movie would fit into the existing attraction space. It’s pretty extensive retheme of the building transforming to something you might see in the middle of Knowhere.
It should still prove to be a mysterious adventure with the permanent new layover to the popular dropping attraction. What’s certain is that the trademark thrills will still be completely intact. Here’s some more info about the attraction from Disney:
The outrageous and irreverent gang will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! – a comically high-energy, rocking new adventure. Guests will be right in the mix with characters from the blockbuster “Guardians of the Galaxy” films.
Deep inside his fortress-like collection, the mysterious Taneleer Tivan (aka The Collector) is displaying his newest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy. They are trapped in customized display cases, suspended over a vast abyss. Unbeknownst to their unscrupulous captor, the intrepid Rocket has escaped and is enlisting the Collector’s VIP guests for help. Guests board a gantry lift, which launches them into a chaotic and hilarious adventure as they join Rocket in an attempt to break his fellow Guardians out of captivity.
The new attraction will anchor a broader universe of Super Heroes that will grow over time at Disney California Adventure park. This exciting new presence will transform the structure currently housing The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ (scheduled to close in early 2017) into an epic new adventure, enhancing the breathtaking free fall sensation with all-new visual and audio effects to create a variety of ride experiences. Guests will experience multiple random, unique ride profiles in which the rise and fall of the gantry lift will rock to the beat of music inspired by the film’s popular soundtrack.
Despite being one of Disney’s worst kept secrets of late, there was still some mystery as to whether or not the makeover would be coming to the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and while there was no official announcement that it would NOT be coming, the makeover to the Florida counterpart was NOT announced. In Florida, there were rumors of a Guardians of the Galaxy re-do of either Tower of Terror or Mission: Space.
Guests are expected to be dropping in by summer 2017 when the attraction opens at Disney California Adventure. The current attraction closes early 2017.
Bring it on, will be interesting to see which way the Marvel universe expands. Will the tower be the gateway to a land behind it?
Is Flicks fun fair on the chopping block or at least part of it or will the Marvel universe grow north towards the poorly used Hollywood backlot area and soon we will see muppets and monsters vacated?
If so how does the Hyperion theater fit in right smack in the middle of it
Current thought is that DCA will expand NORTH actually into the Backlot section. So Tower would serve as a sort of disconnected anchor. There’s still a lot to develop for this concept and it doesn’t make it easy since they can’t use the word MARVEL in any of it.
Thank you that’s interesting info. Is the reason for not being able to use Marvel because several studios have Marvel movie rights?
There’s a lot of dicey rules due to the “in perpetuity” contract that Marvel made with Universal.
They can’t use the word “Marvel” at all in the parks (Hence Super Hero HQ at Innoventions) and there’s restrictions on how characters are used in marketing.
So that basically leaves Disney with Guardians of the Galaxy and Big Hero 6.
Theme Park Tourist just highlighted some of these restrictions here.
