Inside the Houses
Here’s a closer look at each of the experiences including our thoughts on how each one ranks this year.
Scarecrow: Music by SLASH
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
REVIEW: We were big fans of this maze when it debuted in 2022 and we were excited to see it return. We weren’t expecting it to feel so different but it somehow packed even more scares for us this year. Was not expecting this one to float to the top of the list but that’s one thing to love about HHN, you never know what you’re gonna get! I missed having the grain silo with the crow droppings.
SYNOPSIS: At an abandoned Depression-era farm, vengeance takes root. Scarecrows are taking revenge on those who ravaged the land. The only harvest that will be reaped is you. SLASH’s original score for the experience brings an unnerving sense of fear as guests navigate the ominous corridors of the haunted house.
Terrifier
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
REVIEW: Fans of the franchise should find PLENTY to love here. The maze features plenty of Art the clown and some of his most infamous encounters over the course of his films. If there’s any disappointment it’s that the maze was not particularly scary. Great visuals and lots of boo bozxes but it embodied all of the camp without any of the suspense.
- THE SMELLS: There were good AND bad. The bad was not half as bad as we were expecting, we actually were far more grossed out by the smells in The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks
- THE WATER: It could have been luck of the draw on our walkthrough but seemed like Universal might have chickened out on THE WETTEST MAZE EVER component. We actually got more wet inside the Fallout maze than we did here.
SYNOPSIS: Nothing can prepare you for this grisly haunted house based on all three of Damien Leone’s “Terrifier” films. Try your luck against Art the Clown, Vicky and the Little Pale Girl in the Terrifier funhouse. Witness Art’s grotesque handiwork of torture. You’ll be left literally dripping with terror and drenched with fear. It’s a whole new level of gore!
Jason Universe
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃🎃⚫
REVIEW: This was a sleeper hit for us. The legacy characters like Jason (and Texas Chainsaw in other years) can tend to feel just a little tired but the maze this year is like a heroic homage to the character. Super creepy and dark, this one was a lot of fun and super vibey. It feels like you’re in a Jason movie.
SYNOPSIS: Come face to face with the iconic horror villain Jason Vorhees. Stop into the terrifying world of the silent killer. Flee through the woods and into his sinister shack. Enter the summer camp where his gruesome legend began. Jason is back and nothing can save you now!
Monstruos 3: The Ghosts of Latin America
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃⚫⚫
REVIEW: These mazes are usually pretty solid and while the walkthrough felt significantly different this year from last year, a lot of the visuals and gags felt very familiar. It’s always iconic to see the return of La Llorona so we’ll take it. Still, we were hoping for this to a be banger end of this trilogy of mazes. But there’s ALWAYS possibility for more sequels…
SYNOPSIS: La Muerte returns to guide you through the darkness, where three ghostly legends of Latin America await. From the haunting wails of La Llorona, to the sinister smile of La Muelona, to the twisted illusion of La Siguanaba, these ancient myths come to life and death to terrorize you. The darkness is calling. La Muerte wants an answer.
Five Nights at Freddy’s
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃⚫⚫
REVIEW: We’ve never seen these films but were still excited to venture into the campy creeps. Unlike Terrifier, which skimped on the suspense, this whole experience felt super creepy exploring the abandoned pizza parlor. Ironically, despite all the suspense, there wasn’t actually a lot of pay off either when it came to scares. Still absolutely solid visuals. You really felt like you were wandering through this place.
SYNOPSIS: You wouldn’t last one night at Freddy’s, let alone five. You’re about to start the night watch at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, where nothing is what it seems. You’ll be hunted by the deadly animatronics Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy as you flee through creepy, abandoned hallways. You’ll even encounter ghosts in the machines.
The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃⚫⚫
REVIEW: Knowing nothing about the WWE or this character, we were expecting this to fall to the bottom of our list and while it did fall into the bottom half, we were actually thoroughly intrigued the whole way through. Nothing made sense but in a horror maze does it truly have to — if anything the disorientation adds to the suspense of not knowing exactly what’s coming next. Plenty of good scares, as well.
SYNOPSIS: You’re about to go head-to-head with the fiendish Wyatt Sicks at Halloween Horror Nights. Enter an eerie arena, where you’ll go through an ominous, lantern-lit doorway into the maniacal minds of Uncle Howdy, Rambling Rabbit, Mercy the Buzzard, Abby the Witch and Huskus the Pig. Beware, you’re about to meet your match.
Fallout
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃⚫⚫
REVIEW: This is another IP we don’t know anything about but the beauty of these events is that these experiences can open your eyes to new stories you may want to discover and that was the case here. The world building in this maze is incredible and what we saw has us intrigued about the show. For the maze itself, however… not super scary. Still, you are IN this world and it looks great.
SYNOPSIS: Face your fears in post-apocalyptic LA, devastated by nuclear war, based on this hit show and video game franchise “Fallout.” You’ll travel into the vaults and be attacked by raiders alongside Lucy. You’ll escape to the wasteland and confront the bounty hunter, The Ghoul. You’ll even encounter Maximus with the Brotherhood of Steel and see T-60 power armor.
Terror Tram: Enter the Blumhouse
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃⚫⚫
REVIEW: We were worried this was going to feel largely like a rehash of the maze from last year and honestly it was. Still, the visuals were mostly different despite the repeat of a lot of the same IPs. The addition of Insidious to the line up was great — those characters are just so damned creepy. The Purge at the end was reheated spaghetti but we weren’t mad at it. It’s also interesting that after a disappointing box office for M3gan 2.0 that thy didn’t use Megan in her look anywhere during the experience.
SYNOPSIS: The most terrifying Blumhouse villains of the past 15 years are taking over the Terror Tram. And they’re all coming for you. The diabolical M3GAN, The Grabber from beyond the grave from The Black Phone 2, the ruthless killers from The Purge franchise, The Blissfield Butcher from Freaky, The Babyface Killer from Happy Death Day. and more.
The Poltergeist
RATING: 🎃🎃🎃⚫⚫
REVIEW: This was one of our favorites when it first debuted in 2018 and it’s definitely still a solid maze but it just has much stronger competition this year. It was only just barely bumped to the bottom because our walk through just really felt like it was light on the scare actors. This could just be luck of the draw when we went through. Still, you’re IN this world so completely with elaborate sets and visuals… down to the exterior fully recreating the iconic house.
SYNOPSIS: Restless spirits have overrun the infamous house atop a cemetery from the classic film, and they’re drawn to you. You’ll be lured up into the house by the TV’s glowing whisper and cross into another world. Enter a surreal landscape where you’re soon menaced by the rage-fueled Beast. Don’t get lost in the light.
