If you’re stating to hype yourself up for the live action LILO & STITCH this summer, you and your Ohana might want to brush up on the original animated classic. Of course, Disney is ready to help you spend the money to get re-acquainted. The new LILO & STITCH Collector’s Edition of the original animated feature surfs home on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on May 6, 2025.

With a hosted review copy of the film, we took at look at the exclusive bonus content including a wave of bonus features with deleted scenes, extra Elvis tunes, and a look at how Stitch might have popped into other Disney classics.

Right off the bat, this release feels a little more special than most — not just because of the painterly artwork on the cardboard O-ring that surrounds the traditional Blu-ray case — but because the case has an uncharacteristic matte finish, giving it a more luxe feel. Of course, the packaging is hardly important. Let’s sink our teeth into the goodies.

Bonus Materials

Below is the official listing of extras on this release, courtesy of Disney. As always, bonus materials vary by format and retailer. Here’s what was included in our copy.

  • Deleted Scenes
  • Hula Lesson
  • Animating The Hula
  • Audio Commentary
  • DisneyPedia: The Islands – Explore Hawaiʽi, Oʽahu, Maui, Kauaʽi, Lǡnaʽi and Molokaʽi
  • 2 Music Videos and a Behind-The-Music Featurette
  • A Stitch in Time: Follow Stitch Through The Disney Years

In all honesty, the assortment of extras feels like a bento box of goodies that have been seemingly pulled from various sources (and releases) over the years without being fully exhaustive, it plays out as a sort of greatest hits of bonus features.

Hula Lesson and Animating the Hulu are sort of companion pieces, each with a great early 2000s feel featuring archival footage of Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu talking about the art of the hula and showing some of the basic steps. We also get insights into the respectful homage to bringing the dance to life in the film.

The Music section is another blast to the past featuring abridged-for-some-reason music videos for “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by A*Teens and “Your Ohana” performed by the Kamehameha Schools Children’s Chorus. Plus, there is a special “Burning Love” behind the scenes featurette with Wynona Judd that will instantly transport you back to the turn of the millennium.

DisneyPedia: The Islands takes an encyclopedic look at big themes featured by exploring various islands including Hawaiʽi, Oʽahu, Maui, Kauaʽi, Lǡnaʽi and Molokaʽi.

A Stitch in Time: Follow Stitch Through the Disney Years is an absolutely silly archival mocumentary narrated by the late David Ogden Stiers (voice of Jumba) looking at Stitch crashing Disney films since the very beginning. This works as a companion piece with the Inter-STITCH-ials section featuring the iconic trailers for LILO & STITCH that featured the character crashing memorable Disney scenes from THE LITTLE MERMAID, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, ALADDIN, and THE LION KING.

The old Audio Commentary is also included here featuring co- writer/directors Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois plus producer Clark Spencer. It’s a great rewind into this period of time in the studio, hearing about alternate versions of the story that Disney is so careful to excise from any conversations these days.

Despite being labeled as a Collector’s Edition, this latest release is not an exhaustive set of LILO & STITCH media… but it IS in 4k! Still, it’s hard to get past the bonus features situation though, it’s a nice selection but not complete and unfortunately, there’s also no new featurettes or even a sneak peek into the upcoming live action film. So the question becomes: why would you want to add this to your collection? Well, if the 4K rendition isn’t enough, there is something else you wouldn’t have found in this release in the early 2000s and that is the streaming digital code that lets you add the film to your digital collection. If you like having physical media but also the convenience of streaming, then this is a no-brainer. Otherwise, your current DVD, collecting dust in storage, should suffice or you could always catch it on Disney+.
